Fire Safety Consultant

Our trainer, Tony, has over 27 years’ experience (operational and safety roles) within the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) and over 30 in the fire sector. As a previous operational support manager for Humberside Fire & Rescue Service, Tony was instrumental in developing operational readiness for over 300 firefighters including high rise incidents, chemical spills and road traffic collisions.

On leaving the fire service, Tony set up his own Fire Risk Management consultancy and, taking the same professional attitude into the private sector, he is now one of only around 60 UKAS third-party accredited life safety fire risk assessors listed on the FRACS register (and also the NAFRAR list) and one of only a handful of professionals who are also third-party accredited fire door inspectors, through both FDIS and NAFDI.

FDIS Certificated Inspectors are uniquely qualified to undertake fire door inspections, not only have they achieved a Diploma in Fire Doors, but they have also had their competence and knowledge independently assessed to become CertFDI certificated fire door inspectors. In addition, NAFDI Members ensure that all fire door inspections are carried out in accordance with all statutory requirements, hold industry recognised certification and hold a current Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Tony is passionate about education, providing courses accredited by the Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM) and is a national speaker on fire safety for a number of networks, a contributor to the BBC, Sky News and CNN International and he is often heard providing professional comment on LBC radio.

Matt Dawes - Asbestos

Matt Dawes

CoC Asbestos, AIFSM, TechIOSH

Asbestos Consultant & Trainer

We are delighted to have Matt on board as one of our training associates; Matt's initial interest in H&S started back in 1998 when he was appointed as the H&S representative for his then employer. In 2003 he became a "trainee environmental consultant" for a small, West Midlands based consultancy who specialised in the asbestos consultancy field. The early part of his time here was spent learning the responsibilities that came with analytical monitoring (air testing) during and following asbestos remedial works, he was one of the first in the company to undertake the new BOHS Proficiency modules for air sampling (now mandatory for those carrying out air monitoring). He progressed quickly to develop his asbestos surveying skills and was also given key client management responsibilities.

The opportunity arose in 2006 to join a social housing provider, initially as Technical officer (asbestos), which was a new role within the client's organisation and involved overseeing the incumbent service providers for asbestos and ensuring the asbestos policies and processes within the organisation were compliant. Alongside the organisation's H&S provider Matt created and delivered an asbestos awareness course to be delivered to the Direct Labour Organisation (DLO).

In 2009 he returned to the consultancy field and was tasked with establishing a presence in the North Wales area for the business; relocating to the area, over 3 years Matt grew the staff and client base to the point the office was able to function independently and was involved in a major project with a value exceeding £6 million. It was during this time that Matt gained his Certificate in Operational Competence in Asbestos (CoC Asbestos) and other qualifications from the BOHS.

Upon returning to the West Midlands, Matt became more involved in training and found that the satisfaction he felt for informing others about the subject he was passionate about was rewarding for all involved. Matt has worked closely with a number of organisations and has been a keynote speaker for regional events hosted by IOSH and RICS.

Matt has created bespoke training for a number of clients for areas surrounding asbestos and continues to do so; his approachable nature and desire to ensure the information has been understood means that delegates leave his courses feeling confident in their understanding of the subject matter, and he is always accessible following courses to answer questions that may occur.

Vicki has known Matt for over 14 years, working together at the social landlord in the early 2000’s and working together to deliver training. Latterly Vicki has worked with Matt at seminars and supported the development of specific asbestos training for the social housing sector.
